You can overcome Breed-Specific Legislation and housing restrictions by staying informed, getting involved, and networking with people who help you take action. You can't just sit back! Learn the Legislative process and meet your elected officials. Find out which government agencies handle canine ordinances and legislation. Gather information and
present it to elected officials in an orderly manner. Rely on factual
information and avoid emotional commentary.
Research the issue through
the internet, your local library, and government agencies.
Offer alternatives, such as
dangerous dog laws that do not discriminate against a particular breed
but establish criteria to identify dogs as dangerous, appropriate
penalties for irresponsible owners, and clear methods of dealing with
dogs fitting the description of dangerous, or encourage stricter
enforcement of existing laws. Enlist help from lawyers or
organizations that know dog law. Join organizations that
monitor legislation nationwide and rely on local dog owners to report
proposed legislation in their community.
Housing Restrictions (what you can
do)
Check the legal notices in
your newspaper for hearings on proposals relating to pets. Read all regulations and
restrictions before renting or buying. Negotiate with the landlord
or association if a problem arises. Introduce your dog to the landlord
or association members, and demonstrate that you are a responsible owner. Prior approval from a landlord or association board shows a
willingness to cooperate. Create a resume for your
dog. Highlight your dog's veterinary records, any certifications from
obedience classes, and your dog's daily habits. Add any referrals from
past landlords or housing associations. Get in writing any agreement
that allows your dog to live in a home with restrictions.
