A solid recall is a valuable behavior for all dogs.
- An easy way to teach a dog to "come" is put the dog safely on a long leash, say "come" and the run in the opposite direction, so the dog is coming after you. This is a fun way to teach "come" Note: If your dog ever takes off running, never chase it, let them see you run in the opposite direction. They will want to come after you, as it is a game to them.
- Stand away from your dog with a treat and say "come" when they reach you, give them the treat. Work on this from different distances and situations. Slowly wean off the treats, so they learn to do it naturally.
Never call your dog and the subject them to punishment or something unpleasant. They will associate your command with the punishment and will not want to come when called.
